Book Feature - I Heart Stationery

Hello there, I’ve a piece of news to share and I’m pretty thrilled about it! Cookie Cutter is featured in a book! It’s a new book, “I Heart Stationery” by the lovely Charlotte Rivers.

Despite the dominance of digital technology, the old-school way of communicating via handwritten letter/card is still adored by many (raise your hands!). In her book, Charlotte showcases the works of designers around the world who employ different artisan processes in their making of stationery. Yours truly is humbled with an entry, featuring these notecards I made by hand stitching on paper.

My sweet friend, Sarah, spotted the book in the store last week and tweeted me a picture. That got me all excited and I nabbed myself a copy over the weekend. If you, like me, have a weakness for paper goods and beautiful designs, you will LOVE this book! Think an indoor Saturday afternoon, a cup of tea, the couch, and this book! It is so inspiring to see all the great work that is being done (eye candy!) and to learn about the many methods and materials people employ in making stationery.

Package from Japan

Ever since I left Japan, I’ve tried to keep in touch with the wonderful Japanese friends I’m blessed to have met during my stay there. One of the things we do is to send each other a little package during the Christmas and new year period. Well, actually “little” more appropriately describes my packages to them. They on the other hand, are the most generous! I tweeted not long ago about a package full of Muji snacks I received from one of them. Now, look at all the love another of my sweet friends put into this AWESOME package she sent me!

She must have found out about my weakness for snacks. Haha! Super cute packaging! Learning about my craze over Japanese masking tapes, she also went out to get some to include in this package! There was a little handwritten note in the box and amongst other things, she told me to “enjoy the snacks and remember Japan”. Don’t I have awesome friends?!

Watercolour Class by Dawn

Just before all the lunar new year feasting that began last weekend, I attended a watercolour painting class by Melbourne-based artist, Dawn. I must say, I’m so glad I went! We were in a little class of about 10 and we each picked 2 food packagings to paint. I really liked that because for one, it’s food (who doesn’t love food?). Secondly, it’s something that we are constantly in contact with (I especially enjoy walking down supermarket isles and checking out food packaging, swooning over the beautiful ones).

The last time I really touched watercolour painting was when I was in kindergarten but Dawn was most encouraging. It was great to rekindle that interest!

SK-II Clear for Life Project - Kym Ng Interview

You may remember the SK-II trial I did not too long ago (I’m still happily using the products by the way). Following that, I was invited to do an email interview with local MediaCorp celebrity, Kym Ng, who is involved in SK-II’s Clear for Life Project. I don’t usually do such interviews on the blog but what sparked my interest was that it was about highlighting the water crisis in asia and helping women in need connect to a source of safe and clean drinking water.

This is something which many of us take for granted and I thought it apt to post this today. Just as many us in Singapore prepare to celebrate the approaching lunar new year (23 Jan) with lots of food and drinks, I hope we are also aware of the plight of those around us and what we can do to help. Here are Kym’s responses to a few questions of mine. And to those who celebrate it, happy dragon year!!

Q: What are some of the charity projects that you have been personally involved in?

Kym: I've always supported charity work, and over the years, I have been involved in performances for “The President’s Star Charity”, “The Cancer Charity Show” and “Ren Ci Charity Show” in a bid to raise funds for the needy. I believe strongly in furthering the work of charitable organizations. I hope that through my humble effort, I am able to help and hopefully, encourage more people to also lend their hand for the less fortunate, regardless of the extent of one's contribution.

Q: We are very fortunate to be blessed with clean drinking water in Singapore. What are your thoughts on the water crisis in Asia and SK-II’s Clear for Life Project, which helps women in need connect to a source of safe and clean drinking water. Is this something that is close to your heart?

Kym: I think this is a very pressing issue in Asia given the recent natural disasters that have hit quite close to home, eg. the earthquakes in Japan. Water is a very basic need and in Singapore, we have such easy access to water with just a simple turn of the tap. In reality, there are many out there who lack access to this basic necessity. The water issue affects women most as they are the ones who bear the bulk of the burden in transporting water.

Q: Could you tell us a little about the items you selected for SK-II’s Live the Life You Love charity auction? Why did you pick them and are they significant in any way?

Kym: I donated a pair of boots for this auction. I hope to inspire its wearer and other women to take that bold step out of their comfort zone and empower them to walk in confidence to help other women in need. I also donated a charm bracelet by Quintessential. I wore it during the filming of “It’s a Great, Great World” - my latest movie - and the press conference event as well.

Organic Cafe in KL - Haven

Aside from being down with the flu bug, last week was pretty interesting for me. I managed to squeeze in a little trip to Kuala Lumpur. A visit to a nice cafe was the icing on the cake for me! My sweet friend, Fenny, took us there.

Haven is a tranquil little cafe which serves organic food (cherry points for being healthy!). It was really nice to step into this space after being faced with one skyscraper after another, one mega mall after another. I loved the abundance of natural light in the space and the simple but cozy furnishing. The clean and refreshing colour palette complemented the theme of the cafe.

A little tricky to find but I’ll want to revisit this place the next time I’m in town :)

[Bali] - W Hotel

Did you like the last post? I was staying in W Retreat & Spa Bali and it was awesome! I LOVE the design, especially the openness on the ground level. It brightened up the area and added to the sense of space. I also liked how they played with the “W” in naming things eg. the reception is labelled “Welcome” and concierge is “Whatever”. You can’t blame me for dreaming about a return trip.

[Bali] - Sun, Sea, Sand, Food

Remember the little island getaway trip I made last December? I went to Bali, Indonesia. It was quite a spontaneous trip and that added to the fun factor. I really enjoyed myself because it was all about the sun, the sea, the sand and of course food. I didn’t even venture out of the hotel much. It was one of those trips where you lazed, read, chit chatted and dozed off.

Perfect for the year-end because it made all the hard work in the year worth it!

Happy new year, folks! Did you have a lovely holiday. I certainly did! I gave myself a little break, found time to read, caught up with friends, ticked off what I’ve achieved in my 2011 resolution list, and had an awesome new year’s eve. I also want to say thank you for sticking with me for the past year and for the sweet comments you left which kept me going.

Today’s the first official work day of 2012. While there is an inevitable slight sense of dread that all the celebration has ended, I’m also excited about the brand new year that lies ahead. I have some plans lined up for Cookie Cutter and can’t wait to have them realised. Let’s all make this an awesome year! Never stop dreaming because it’s when you dream that you can have a dream come true!

Handmade Festive Cards

I used to make Christmas cards when I was a kid. That stopped when I thought it was much easier and faster to buy them. Then when I moved to Japan, I learnt that many of my Japanese friends had a practice of making their own nengajo (new year cards). They often made a little collage with their family photos and printed it on cardstock. I loved that there was a personal touch to these cards. So I began making my own festive cards again.

This year, my cards spoke of my love affair with MT tapes. I used simple materials and had a fun time coming up with varied designs. Here are a few.

SK-II Skin Transformation Part 2

Do you remember the SK-II trial that I blogged about? Well, it's already the 7th day today! So what are my thoughts?

Initially I was a little concerned about the extra time I had to spend in the bathroom, to apply more things on my face. You see, I was previously a straightforward wash-tone-moisturise girl (hey, that's already 3 steps!). But I found that I got used to it after a while, especially when I knew I was doing good for my skin! We all deserve self-love and giving a little more time to oneself is just that. On the whole, I find my skin tone to be slightly more even as compared to before (yay!). This is based on just 7 days so I'm looking forward to more improvements with continued usage.

SK-II Skin Transformation

Recently, my lovely friend, Sarah and I were thrilled to be invited for a 7-day skin transformation with cosmetics brand, SK-II. It is a 7-day trial for us to transform our skin to crystal clarity! I have heard a lot of praise for SK-II previously but had never tried the products. This is my chance to test it out for myself!

It started with us having a one-on-one skin test and counseling session at the SK-II counter. There was a detailed explanation of our test results by the friendly SK-II consultant. So, my skin condition is generally good but there are still a few areas in which I could improve on. I also took the opportunity to ask some skin care related questions. Hehe! After that, we were each presented with a SK-II festive coffret set that catered to our skin needs (feeling pampered!). Sarah and I both received the Pitera Revival Set, which is centered on the Facial Treatment Essence.

I am of course excited to try it out and looking forward to seeing the improvements to my skin! What better way to treat my skin after all that sun exposure during my island getaway last weekend. Yesterday night was the first time I used the products. Guess what? I’m going to track and share my skin results over here. At the end of the 7 day, we’ll see if this is a yay or nay. Exciting!

[Shanghai] - Out & About + Suzhou

Hello! Today’s post will be the last in our [Shanghai] series. I’ll wrap it up by taking you with me to enjoy some of the Shanghai sights!

I also made a day trip to Suzhou. A place I’ve been wanting to visit since years ago. Finally made it there! There’s a Chinese saying which when literally translated goes: Above, there is heaven; below, there are Suzhou and Hangzhou. It’s an expression which conveys the beauty of Suzhou and Hangzhou (should put Hangzhou as one of my places to visit next).

It was a day trip so I didn’t have time for much but Suzhou enchanted me with its beauty nevertheless. Red leaves, peaceful rivers and ponds. A quiet stroll. An appreciation of the rich history.

NEW Plushie - Superhero Meng

I’ve been wanting to show you the latest plushie I made! Introducing, Super Meng! He wears a detachable superhero red cape and has cute freckles. All my plushies so far have got English names and I thought it’ll be fun to give this one a Chinese name! What do you think? Super Meng is available in my Etsy shop.

I’m happy with how Super Meng turned out and am thinking of making a whole range of superhero plushies. Hehe!

On a separate note, I’m going on a short getaway this weekend! Hope to come back with some photos. If I don’t, it’ll be because I spent too much time lazing at the beach with a book in one hand, and a beer in the other :p. See you next week!

[Shanghai] - Le Petit Jardin

There will be a few more posts to our [Shanghai] series but today’s post will be the last on a cafe. I hope you’ll like it!

Le Petit Jardin resembles a vintage shop from the outside but upon entering, you will feel as if you’ve stepped into someone’s house. There is seating available in 2 rooms which are clearly furnished with old Europe in mind. Think dark and warm colour palette. Beyond that, you’ll enter what resembles an indoor garden. Gentle sunlight filtered by the white drapes floods the entire area. Hanging lamps, books, shelves and flowers adorn this cozy space.

Perfect place for afternoon tea! You’ll feel as though you were invited to a friend’s quaint and beautiful house. Did I like it? Of course, I did! :)

Hearts and Crafts: The People that Make Hermès

A little while ago, I was invited for the private screening of the film "HEARTS AND CRAFTS: The People that Make Hermès", in which Hermès pays homage to the numerous Hermès métiers. It was interesting to go behind the scenes and gain a better understanding of what goes into the making of these luxury items. The documentary film, I thought, is a celebration of artisan craftsmanship and about a quest for excellence. It reinforces my beliefs that the fineness of handmade is irreplaceable.

[Shanghai] - Lolo Love Vintage

Lolo Love Vintage is a cute vintage clothing shop cum cafe. It’s off the main road but once you enter its ground, you will get a sense of its quirkiness. The shop is housed in what looks like the ground level of a double storey residential property. The sitting area of the cafe starts from the outer area of the house and extends to the big patio in front of it. Nestle on the retro furniture while you sip your coffee or you can have a bed too!

I went on a short trip last week to Shanghai and guess what? I’ll be doing a series of posts on Shanghai here! The weather was great while I was there. It was cool enough to wear a jacket but not so freezing that one had to pile on layers. You’ll know by now that my travels always involve visiting cafes and indie shops, so this trip was no exception.

I have a love affair with artisan bread and I was at Baker & Spice on a lovely morning for my fix. It didn’t disappoint. Sitting at where I was, I could see freshly baked bread being taken out from the oven in the kitchen behind. After I greedily polished my breakfast, I slowly sipped my cup of freshly squeezed orange juice while enjoying the scene on the little lane outside. It was of flower peddlers, cyclists, grandparents and grandchildren, and of falling autumn leaves.

[Tokyo] - Cafe Ikanika

I’ve saved the best for last! Today I’ll let you into one of my favourite cafes for my recent Tokyo trip. Cafe Ikanika in Jiyugaoka is one of those places where I don’t wish to describe in too many words and sentences. I feel that if I do so, I will be tainting your impression of it. This charming little space is an embodiment of simplicity and natural living.

I stepped in on a cool afternoon. A little late for lunch time but which allowed me find a little empty table in this small cafe. For the next hour or so, time slowed down. Being inside somehow led me to relax, speak in soft whispers, feel more clearly the light breeze, listen to the sounds of the birds outside. I took delight in the rustic interior decor as well as the delicious food set before me. Food that’s prepared in a way that maintains the integrity of the original produce, retaining as much of the natural flavour as possible.

[Tokyo] - Kate Coffee

Have you ever stepped into a space which you felt is like an immediate respite? That you’ve just left the hustle and bustle outside the door? Kate Coffee (recommended by the lovely Hello Sandwich) was that for me.

The few people inside were engaged in conversations of quiet whispers but which seemed no less engaging. A soft music played in the background, broken occasionally by the sound of the coffee machine. And so I sat, sipped, listened, watched.

I sat facing this window and noticed many kids walking down from that gentle slope ahead in all their joyful childish demeanor. So I guessed there must be a school or some sort up there. I ended up keeping count of the number of kids emerging from there.

[Tokyo] - Rainbow Kitchen

I love Shimokitazawa. On this recent trip, I had initially planned to re-visit a favourite cafe which charmed my socks off the last time I was there. After that, I would walk around and leave by late afternoon. Instead, I found myself lingering till after night fall. As it got dark and the temperature turned cooler, the crowd thinned as well. I got to experience a different Shimokitawaza. It was more mellow with the occasional quiet chatter punctuating the air. My stride was light and unhurried as I took in the sights. It was such a beautiful night!

I eventually settled at Rainbow Kitchen for dinner. It is a gorgeous little space! Lucky us got to sit side by side at this cute little table facing the window. As I sipped my drink, I gazed at the people wandering the street outside and then at the beautiful shadows dancing on my table created by the candlelight.

So you’ve been reading my current series of Japan posts and you’re wondering if I did anything besides eat. Hmm... let me think really hard...haha, yes I did! I walked. Walking during travels allows me to take in the sights slowly, notice the nuggets of everyday life in that country, as well as the bits that are unusual. When you do this, you will be amazed at how much more you take in. This time when I visited Japan, the temperature was perfect for walking. It was nice and cool. So here are some of the street sights I enjoyed, both kawaii and ordinary. Enjoy!

[Tokyo] - Armwood Cottage

Thank you, lovelies, for sharing my joy regarding the good news in the previous post! Thank you also to the sweet folks of Public Garden (a market which I participated in previously) for their shoutout and kind words. The second Public Garden will be on 5 Nov. I won’t be a vendor this time but will definitely drop by as a shopper. You should too!

And continuing with our Japan series, I’m taking you to a charming cafe in Shinjuku today. What intrigued me about Armwood Cottage was that it was essentially a wooden structure. I was so drawn to its rustic-ness. Nestled between 2 modern high rise buildings, it formed an interesting juxtaposition, which made me want to check it out even more.

The inside was cozy with not too many tables. I love it this way as it felt more private and exclusive. I took a while ogling around before making my order. The food of course, didn’t disappoint!

[Tokyo] - Cafe Mame Hico

TGIF! It’s been a busy week for me! I was pretty much tied up with a huge custom plush. In between, I was packing orders for pouches and zines and sending them off to my sweet buyers. I shouldn’t complain really.

I know you’ve been looking forward and so, here’s the first in my current series of Japan posts! As you may already know, I was in the Land of the Rising Sun recently for about a week. It was so FUN! If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you’ll know that my travels usually revolve around uncovering cafes with great interiors, crafty stuff, zakka, food and soaking in the street views. Well, this trip was no exception. The difference is, there is SO MUCH of these to do in Japan! So, here we go!

Cafe Mame Hico in Shibuya was a real tough one to find. Why? Because I couldn’t see it on the street level! I had to go to the basement of some random building and after I emerged from the stairs, apart from the cafe, I felt like I was in a different place as before. Still puzzled. But by the time I got there, I couldn’t be bothered to sort this out. I was there for breakfast and my stomach was not very happy with the long walk.

I entered the cafe and felt a stark difference from when I was on the other side of the door. This was like an oasis of calm. Dark wood furnishings, dim lightings, a huge long table in the middle of the room, beautiful fresh flowers and the smell of coffee greeted me.

Although there were a couple of individual tables, the few people in the cafe were all sitting at the long table. I did the same. It felt intriguing. We were all seated at the same table, somewhat communal, yet we all had enough personal space. People spoke softly and only the sound of the coffee machine and cutleries punctuated the soft music.

The breakfast menu comprised mainly of toasts. But you’ll be happy with it. And oh, if you’re a coffee lover, you’ll like this place!

Run of Mill (issue 2)!

So, here’s issue 2 of my comic zine, Run of the Mill! I’m thrilled to say that even though I only recently posted it in my Etsy shop, I’ve already sold a couple of copies! I also had fun decorating the envelopes I packed them in with my MT tapes :)

Like the first issue, this zine is based on my real life experiences. It is light-hearted and seeks to bring out the humour in our everyday lives. Hi! I’m back from my trip to Japan. It was awesome! I have lots to share with you. So of course, we're going to have a Japan series here! But I’m going to need a little time to sort all that images. I also have a few plushie custom orders to fulfill. So for now, here’s a peek into what I spent on during my time there.

Oh, this, I kept to boast :p I finally went to New York Bar at Park Hyatt! It’s been a dream to visit ever since I saw Scarlett Johansson there onscreen. Beautiful place. Even more mesmerizing after some bubbles.

Needless to say, I also lugged home lots of fabrics. So there’s going to be plushies in new designs and fabrics coming up in the months ahead :) My second zine, Run of the Mill (issue 2) is also out! I’m so excited about it and will tell you more in the next post!

Cute Muji Handicraft Kit

I bought this SUPER CUTE handicraft kit from Muji and am currently loving it to bits! You can have fun decorating the empty faces/objects in the pages. Give them funny expressions, a head of hair etc. There are also sheets of adhesives at the end with various facial features for your use. Imagine the fun and creativity! I'll say it's for both kids and the kid in all of us!

Isn't it awesome?! Confession: I've never stepped into Muji and walked out empty handed before :p

I thought my store bought steam cake looks so miserable. So I made it a happy cake!

Hello there, I'll be off to Tokyo early tomorrow morning and I can barely hold the excitement right now (you know how crazy I am about Japan). There are places I MUST go and I hope to check out some new areas as well. I'm already wishing I had planned for a longer trip instead! You haven't been forgotten though. I've prepared some posts for you so you can still check in here :)

I've had several new animal zipper pouches added to my Etsy shop recently. I'm really happy with them and feel that they are true to the Cookie Cutter's spirit of being quirky and happy.

[Bangkok] - Street Views

Did you enjoy my guest post on Wed? Those 2 were certainly my favourites for this recent trip. For this last post of the Bangkok series, I'm sharing some random things which I found interesting/cute when I was out and about.

The cables that hang all over in the streets amaze me.

I was intrigued by the pattern on the gate. Fancied the baby blue colour too.

Thought the "う" in "うなぎ" (eel) was interpreted in a cute and smart way.

Look at the tiling on the floor! Resembles a Japanese motif.

Love the illustrations on this coaster.

That's all for this series. I wish I had more but it was a short trip. I hope you enjoyed it. The good news is, I'll be heading to Tokyo (!!) very soon and you know you'll be showered with great blog posts after I return! Man, I can't wait to go!

[Bangkok] - Audreys Cafe & Bistro

Hi there, as promised, here is the first of the current series of Bangkok post. If you’ve missed it, I did a number of posts on Bangkok previously too. Lots of lovely cafes were discovered and shared! Click here to read them.

So, no longer submitting to the calls of the malls, I continued in my quest to uncover another side of Bangkok (which I’m really enjoying by the way). Opened for only a couple of months is Audreys Cafe & Bistro which I visited on one of my walks. Stepping in, it became obvious to me that the colour theme is Tiffany Blue (even a drink I later ordered came in this colour!) “Audrey”, “Tiffany Blue”, geddit? Audrey Hepburn and Breakfast in TIffany! The 2 storey space is furnished in European/French style with Chiavari chairs and cozy sofas. I especially love a few of the stools I spotted which were made with old sewing machine legs. Wish I could take these home with me.

Little things from Bangkok + Feature

Hello there! How is your Monday getting on so far? It’s raining cats and dogs over here right now as I type this post. Hmm... it’ll be perfect to cozy up on the couch and watch the Emmys. But I’ve got quite a bit to catch up on since I was away in Bangkok from mid last week till Saturday. Yes, you are right, there’ll be exciting Bangkok related posts coming up. But right now, I’m going to share a few of the cute things I bought on my trip there.

Remember these erasers from years back? I used to collect erasers. Had them in all colours, shapes and some were even scented! Most of the time, I wouldn’t bear to use them.

Glue for craft making used to come in this little container with a cute face on it. I’ll stick my fingers right in and get them all sticky.

Wooden measuring spoons. Aren’t they gorgeous?

These are what I spend my money on when I travel. Little zakka items. Can’t get enough of them! What do you buy when you travel?

Aesop at Rue Saint Honore

Aesop store at Rue Saint Honore, Paris. Inspired by Parisian parquetry floor, it was designed by Australian-based, March Studio. The wood was hand-cut into about 3500 pieces before being sealed, numbered then sent to be built in Paris.

I can't even begin to fathom the meticulousness that went into this!

[Shop Update] Squid Plush & Beaver Zipper Pouch

Hi there, I want to introduce you to two cuties I just listed in the shop this week. I’m pretty happy with how they turned out. Sometimes, I wish I can keep them for myself. Shhh.

Have you seen a squid plushie? You will now. Meet mischievous looking Ika. Ika was a little trickier to make because of his long slim tentacles but I’ll say the extra effort was worth it.

About Cafes - Jimmy Monkey

One of my favourite things to do is to visit new cafes in town. Honestly, I’m not a coffee drinker. I visit these places really to check out the interior aesthetics. Even before I check out the menu, I’m busy gawking around (not at peeps, mind you). A lot of these cafes now put together some slick new tables and chairs or those that have have been deliberately made to look aged. It doesn’t always work and the effect instead screams contrived. I can’t quite pinpoint what it is that makes some tick and conjure the right ambience. I look to the many lovely cafes in Japan and Taipei that I swoon over. Often, the owners are very involved in the construction of the cafe itself and to them, it’s about creating a space for like-minded individuals. It’s not a mere money making venture. Maybe it has to do with the whole spirit behind it?

I visited Jimmy Monkey in the west yesterday and thought it rather cozy. If you’re looking for Aussie style cafes, this might just be what you are looking for. At one point, the smell of vegemite permeated the air. Mmm... Oh, they serve alcohol too :)

Every time I complete a crafty project, I feel happy knowing that I’ve made something with my own hands. It gives me even more joy when I receive a sale order, knowing that my creations can bring joy to others too. I think that’s the greater meaning to what I do. It’s not simply about making money (there are easier ways to do this). To all my customers, thank you for your support!

I’ve listed 2 new products in my etsy shop over the week and I thought I’ll share them with you here too. The first is an addition to the zipper pouch line. It’s this sneaky fellow which I decided is a skunk. I love that I gave it floral prints on its face!

The second is a baby pillow/ plush. It’s a sweet little fox which you would find hard not wanting to hug.

Seeing the beauty in the Everyday - Jonsi

I came across the work of Japanese photographer, Jonsi and couldn’t help being drawn to them. Perhaps it’s the fact that he’s in Toyama prefecture, also part the Hokuriku region which I used to reside in. I found some of the sights familiar because I used to go on road trips during the holidays. Oh what fun those were! But undisputedly. what’s stands out in his photos are how he makes everyday Japanese life scenes look extraordinary.

The turnout was good and I got to chat with friends I knew only online previously, blog readers, friends I haven’t seen for a while, friends’ friends, other creative/entrepreneurial folks. One of the highlights was having people coming over and saying that they came specially after seeing my feature in the papers yesterday!

MAAD + Public Garden + Feature

Yeehaa, it's a new week again! I had a good weekend. The fun started Friday late afternoon at MAAD (Market for Artists & Designers) where I had a little stall. It was a fun night with lots of creative folks from various fields under one roof. I thought the energy and creativity was palpable! We even had president elects Dr Tony Tan and Mr Tan Jee Say drop by. The latter bought something from me!! I want to say a big thank you to those of you who came by to say hi. It's such a joy getting to meet you in person and your support means a lot. Here are a few photos of my stall taken by my sweet friend, Marie, who had a stall next to mine. She makes the prettiest pouches and bags!

Hello there, how are you? I had a short break yesterday as our little country celebrated her 46th birthday. Besides that, I’ve been prepping for the stall that I’ll be putting up at MAAD this Friday (see previous post). I’m looking forward to it.

New Zipper Pouches + MAAD

During the weekend that just passed, I sent off my plushies at the post office. I was happy that they found a new home but at the same time, it was a surprising emotional goodbye. I realised that when you make something lovingly with your hands and see it take form, there is going to be some attachment involved. And it’s even more bittersweet when these plushies are one of a kind pieces. Nevertheless, I am joyful that I’m able to share my creations with others who appreciate them :)

I want to make sure I’m always doing that. So, last week, I launched a new line of pouches which you’ve not seen before in my Etsy shop. You’ll find that they keep to Cookie Cutter’s style of “happy and quirky”.

I used a fun mix of fabrics for the front, back and inner lining. These cheerful pouches are great for the young and young at heart!

The other piece of news which I’m excited to share with you is: Cookie Cutter is going to be at MAAD (Market for Artists & Designers) this Friday, 12 Aug, 5pm-12mn, at the Red Dot Museum. I’m having a little stall that night and I’ll love for you to come say hi!

Eek! Are we already into August? (scans my mind quickly for what I’ve achieved so far this year) On the positive side, I can’t wait for these super warm months to be over. Sewing in my little work area, which comes with little windows, in the sweltering afternoon heat is no small feat. By the time I proudly hold my completed project in my hand, my face is glistening.

So here’s one plush I completed recently. Definitely felt warm but also happy! This is Wolly, who wears a top with Japanese prints. Some of you might have already met him on my Twitter on FB Page but I thought I’ll show him off to the non-followers over here :) Wolly’s available over here.

Art on your lashes

False eyelashes are so common in our little city that I sometimes feel naked when I walk about town without any eye makeup. Yeah... I’m not great with them. I usually don’t bat an eyelid (pun intended) when I come across false eyelashes for sale. But THESE paper eyelashes, which I spotted here, certainly caught my eye!

They are inspired by Chinese paper cutting and I’m drawn to how intricate they are! They are like little pieces of art! And yes, they can be re-used.

Wacky Faces & Creatures Keychains

Cookie Cutter designs have always been about being cute but also a little quirky. I decided to push the envelope a little more and started making series of wacky face and wacky creature keychains. The first 2 which are now available in my little shop are Molar and Julie!

I Have A Room With Everything

I had my calendar marked. 23 July, 8pm. That is the opening for I Have A Room With Everything and I was delighted to have been invited. Curated by Yanda of The Artist and His Model, this is an exhibition that celebrates the beauty of print. With a handpicked selection of more than 200 items, including Fashion invites or lookbooks by Wunderkind, limited edition books by John Clang, WERK zines etc., this is truly a treat! It doesn’t matter if you aren’t a design student or a professional or are not familiar with the who’s who of the design world. You just need an appreciation for design and print to enjoy this exhibition. The best part of it? No irritating labels that tell you to keep your hands away from the display items. You are welcomed to feel and browse the publications!

Walking up the flights of slightly dimmed stairs to the exhibition room, I did feel like I was going to visit a friend in his apartment. And I wish I too have a room with everything.

I’ve completed my first zine, Run of the Mill, and am pretty happy with it! I’ve been wanting to do a zine for some time now. The indie and underground vibes to zines really draw me to them. Run of the Mill is a comic zine and journalistic in style. The contents are inspired by a few of my travel experience. It’ll bring you a giggle or two! Hi lovelies, I guess you should have noticed by now that I’ve made some revamp to the blog. Yep, the cookies banner that made everyone hungry are now gone. I thought hard about this change because the cookies have become like a logo to Cookie Cutter. But I felt having the spools will be a better reflection of what I do as a crafter and as well as what I have in my little shop.

As before, you can easily find how to reach me on Twitter, facebook, my etsy shop and email in the sidebar. In addition to the usual way of subscribing to the posts, I’ve added an option for you to follow the blog via your email. On the whole, I decide to go with a cleaner and fresher look.
